Instinct vs OpenAI Dots

Instinct vs OpenAI Dots: the invite-only AI agent you text or call, compared with ChatGPT's always-on agents with their own cloud computer. Capabilities, controls, pricing, and where Runtime fits.

Updated October 7, 20264 min read

TL;DR: Instinct is the simpler pick for life admin: text or call it and it handles errands, bills, and bookings. OpenAI Dots is the stronger pick for knowledge work inside ChatGPT, Slack, and your apps, with admin controls on business plans. Both tie you to one vendor's stack; for team operations on payment data, Runtime fits.

Instinct and OpenAI Dots both represent the 2026 move from chatbots to agents that work for you between conversations. Instinct comes from a startup betting that texting an assistant beats any app. Dots come from OpenAI, built into the ChatGPT account many people already pay for.

Instinct vs OpenAI Dots at a glance

Instinct is a personal assistant from Spear Street Technology, Inc., founded by Noah Shinn, a former research scientist at Sierra. You text it or call it, and it uses a phone and a computer the way a person would: disputing a bill, sending gifts, ordering groceries, booking appointments, planning trips. It launched as an invite-only beta in August 2026 and added Instinct Concierge, which calls businesses for you, in September.

OpenAI Dots are always-on agents in ChatGPT, announced at OpenAI DevDay on September 29, 2026. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser, works through the plugins you have connected (OpenAI cites more than 4,000 apps), and remembers context across sessions. You reach the same dot in ChatGPT on desktop, web, and mobile, in Slack, and by voice call, and it can work on your laptop if you connect it.

Product scope

Instinct. Built for life admin. The tasks on its site are personal: bills, gifts, groceries, doctor's appointments, weekend getaways. Concierge extends that to phone calls with businesses that don't book online.

OpenAI Dots. Built for ongoing work. A dot takes on responsibility for a goal, keeps making progress, does read-only research when idle to suggest next steps, and sends updates and questions back to you. You can watch its cloud browser or take over and return control. It fits research, inbox, documents, and project follow-through as much as personal errands.

Controls and data

Instinct. Its terms make the user responsible for its inputs, actions, and outputs, including financial and legal consequences. Your materials may be used for model training by default, with an opt-out. It relies on third-party model providers that it does not name.

OpenAI Dots. Dots inherit your existing ChatGPT app permissions, apply automatic approval checks, and accept custom rules, such as reviewing drafts before sending. Sign-ins happen in private browser sessions, and credentials go into private forms outside the conversation. On Enterprise, dots are off by default and workspace admins enable them and manage permissions.

Availability

Instinct. Invite-only, for adults, served from the US.

OpenAI Dots. Rolling out to ChatGPT Pro users outside the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, to Business Premium worldwide, and as an admin-enabled beta on Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare.

Pricing

Instinct does not publish pricing. Its terms say some features may require fees, which are non-refundable.

OpenAI Dots: your first dot is included in ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost. OpenAI has said more dots and capacity will come later; that pricing is not published.

Where Runtime fits

Both products tie you to one vendor: Instinct's hosted service on unnamed models, or OpenAI's cloud on OpenAI's model. Both are organized around one person's agent.

Runtime is the third option for team operations on regulated payment data. It has no single-vendor dependency: agent computers run in your AWS, GCP, or Azure account or fully self-hosted, you bring your own sandbox provider, and you choose models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or open-weight models in your cloud, with harness routing across Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode. If a provider has an outage or deprecates a model, your agents keep running. Your team sets the guardrails: read-only by default, approvals before money moves, RBAC, masked credentials, card numbers and SSNs stripped from prompts and logs, and a full audit trail per run. And it is built for teams: support, payment ops, finance, risk, and compliance share agents, templates, and memory, with spend controls by role. A forward-deployed AI engineer builds the first agents with you. Rain replaced $250k in vendor spend with Runtime.

You can even run OpenAI models on Runtime. What you don't get from a personal agent is the control a payments team needs.

Which should you choose

  • Choose Instinct if you want to text or call an assistant for errands, bills, and bookings, and you have an invite.
  • Choose OpenAI Dots if you already use ChatGPT and want an always-on agent for ongoing work across your apps and Slack.
  • Choose Runtime if agents need to work card data, PII, ledgers, or payouts across several teams, with guardrails you set and no dependency on one cloud or model vendor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Instinct and OpenAI Dots?

Instinct is an invite-only personal assistant you reach by text or phone that handles errands, bills, and bookings. OpenAI Dots are always-on agents inside ChatGPT, running on GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computer and browser, that keep work moving across connected apps and can be reached in ChatGPT, Slack, and by voice.

Can OpenAI Dots be used at work?

Yes. Dots are available on ChatGPT Business Premium, and Enterprise workspaces can enable a beta through their admin. Pro users outside the EEA, UK, and Switzerland also get access. Instinct is built for personal use.

Do Instinct and OpenAI Dots ask before taking actions?

OpenAI says Dots apply built-in safeguards, your existing ChatGPT app permissions, and automatic approval checks, and you can add custom rules such as reviewing drafts before they are sent. Instinct's terms make the user responsible for every action it takes, including financial consequences.

Are Instinct or OpenAI Dots suitable for payment operations?

Neither is built for regulated payment work across teams. Each runs on its vendor's cloud and models, without deployment in your environment or approvals designed around payouts and ledger entries. Runtime is built for that job.
